HC Deb 22 November 1974 vol 881 cc568-9W
Mr. Stephen Ross

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how much mutton has been sold by retailers in each of the last three years and in the first six months of 1974; and what was the average retail price per pound.

Mr. Bishop

The only source of information is the National Food Survey, which did not separately distinguish mutton from lamb before 1972. Average consumption per head per week of mutton purchased by households in 1972 is estimated at 0.16 oz., in 1973 at 0.13 oz. and for the first six months of 1974 at 0.12 oz. The average prices per lb. of these purchases for 1972, 1973 and the first six months of 1974 were 26.6p, 37.5p and 41.4p respectively.
