HC Deb 22 November 1974 vol 881 c562W
Sir G. de Freitas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether she will add those workers who are engaged in heavy steel mills, tube works, and nail, screw, nut and bolt manufacturer, to the list of those who will benefit under the new regulations which came into force on 28th October 1974, and which added occupational deafness to the schedule of industrial diseases prescribed under the Industrial Injuries Act.

Mr. Alfred Morris

In accordance with the recommendations of the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council in its report on occupational deafness, the scheme now introduced has been limited to those industrial processes in which the noise levels are highest. Having regard to the availability of the technical and medical resources necessary to deal with claims, wider cover would not be feasible at present.
