HC Deb 22 November 1974 vol 881 cc561-2W
Mr. Molloy

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what representations have been sent her regarding advertisements sponsored by cigarette manufacturers offering free samples of cigarettes; what replies she has sent; and if she will make a statement;

(2) if she will seek to prevent cigarette manufacturers from offering free samples of cigarettes to the public via advertisements.

Dr. Owen

I am taking this matter up with the cigarette manufacturing industry. I am particularly concerned that such offers might encourage children to try to obtain free cigarettes.

I met the industry in July and discussed a number of matters with it, including advertising and other forms of sales pro- motion of cigarettes, with a view to securing by voluntary agreement, a number of sensible measures to bring about a reduction in cigarette smoking, particularly by the young. I will be having a further meeting with the industry shortly on these matters.
