asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many local education authorities have used the provisions of the Education (Work Experience) Act 1973 to help older pupils prepare for the transition to industrial employment; and if he will make a statement.

My Department does not collect details of the arrangements made by individual authorities in particular areas of the school curriculum. I am sending my hon. Friend a copy of a Departmental circular which emphasises the care with which work experience schemes need to be devised.
