HC Deb 19 November 1974 vol 881 c405W
Mr. Welsh

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many known sufferers from multiple sclerosis there are in Scotland.

Mr. William Ross

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services has provided an estimate of 40,000 for the United Kingdom. A separate Scottish figure is not available.

Mr. Welsh

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland, what plans he has for funding research into multiple sclerosis in Scotland.

Mr. William Ross

None at present. I am very much aware of the importance of research in this area, and I am in touch with developments. A major research project, funded from other sources, was commenced in September of this year and includes an epidemiological and genetic study of multiple sclerosis in Orkney, Shetland and Caithness.
