HC Deb 18 November 1974 vol 881 cc298-9W
Mr. Terry Walker

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what estimate he has made of the number of electors who were unable to vote in the last two General Elections because their names had been left off the register through no fault of their own; and if he will give consideration to allowing registration officers to issue supplementary registers in order to have names added to the electoral register during, the course of the year.

Dr. Summerskill

There is no information available on which to base such an estimate. Following the recommendation of the Speaker's Conference on Electoral Law in 1973, my right hon. Friend has set up a working party to study means of keeping the electoral register more up to date. Any recommendations for adding names to the register during its currency would need legislation to implement them.
