HC Deb 15 November 1974 vol 881 c278W
Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he is satisfied with the provision made for live professional and amateur theatre productions in Wales.

Mr. Barry Jones

The provision of theatre productions in Wales is a matter for the professional and amateur companies concerned. Government funds for the encouragement of the arts in Wales are chanelled via the Welsh Arts Council, which is solely responsible for deciding how these funds should be allocated.

Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what correspondence he has received from the Drama Association of Wales about financial support; and what reply he has sent.

Mr. Barry Jones

Representations on financial matters have recently been made on behalf of the association. My right hon. and learned Friend replied that support for the arts in Wales is channelled through the Welsh Arts Council, which already assists the association, and that it has not been the practice to assist particular bodies in the arts field by direct grants from Government Departments.
