§ Mr. David Steelasked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) whether he has received any representations from the Scottish livestock industry about the provision of slaughtering facilities in Scotland;
(2) whether he is satisfied that adequate slaughterhouse capacity exists to meet the present and future demands of the Scottish livestock industry.
§ Mr. William RossI have received no specific representations, though the Government recognise that slaughterhouses in many areas are operating at full capacity to deal with the current high level of slaughterings. I believe that existing facilities and those presently planned or under construction will provide sufficient capacity of a high standard to meet our foreseeable needs.
