HC Deb 14 November 1974 vol 881 c185W
18. Mr. Marks

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will exempt national insurance pensions, including retirement and widows' pensions, from income tax.

Dr. Gilbert

My right hon. Friend does not feel justified in relieving such pensions from tax regardless of the size of the pensioners' income. The substantial further increase in National Insurance pensions that we propose for next April, together with the new age allowance for elderly people announced in my right hon. Friend's Buldget, are much more effective ways of giving the most help to those in greatest need.
