Dr. Owen

About 16 per cent.

Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the National Health Service hospital expenditure in 1973; and what proportion of the total was expenses on hospitals for the mentally handicapped.

Dr. Owen

Estimated capital and revenue expenditure for the financial year 1973–74 was £205.0 million and £1,461.6 million respectively. It was estimated that 5 per cent. of the capital expenditure would be on hospital services for the mentally handicapped.

An estimate of revenue expenditure for the mentally handicapped in 1973–74 is not yet available but in 1972–73, when total revenue expenditure was £1,262.7 million, the proportion spent on hospitals provided specifically for the mentally handicapped was 5.6 per cent. A separate record is not maintained of revenue expenditure on services for the mentally handicapped in other types of hospital.
