asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection, what has been the cost of food subsidies in the past six months; and what is the estimated cost of maintaining currently subsidised foodstuffs at their present price for the next six months.

Expenditure on food subsidies in the period from April to September 1974 amounted to £180 million. The estimated cost of maintaining subsidies at their present levels and at present costs for the six months from October 1974 to March 1975 is £320 million.
