HC Deb 11 November 1974 vol 881 cc44-5W
Mr. Michael Latham

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what was the value of work carried out by local authority direct labour building departments in the period January-March 1974 on (a) new housing, (b) other new work. (c) housing repair and maintenance, and (d) other repair and maintenance work;

(2) how many administrative, professional, technical and clerical staffs were employed by local authority direct labour building departments in October 1973;

(3) how many operatives, including apprentices, were employed by local authority direct labour building departments in April 1974 on (a) new housing, (b) other new work, (c) housing repairs and maintenance and (d) other repair and maintenance work.

Mr. Kaufman

No inquiry was conducted with regard to local authorities' direct labour activities in respect of the first quarter of 1974 because of the impending local government reorganisation. The last inquiry was in respect of output for the third quarter 1973, and employment in October of that year.

Final figures are available and these are as follows:

GREAT BRITAIN—LOCAL AUTHORITIES: OUTPUT AND EMPLOYMENT OF DIRECT LABOUR BUILDING DEPARTMENTS
Value of work done July—September 1973 Operative employment (including apprentices) October 1973
million) (thousands)
New housing 12.1 10.0
Other new work 23.1 17.5
Housing repair and maintenance 51.0 68.3
Other repair and maintenance 66.3 79.8
152.5 175.6
The number of administrative, professional, technical and clerical staff in October 1973 was 8,700.

Mr. Michael Latham

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will list the local authorities which have received loan sanction to build dwellings by direct labour during 1974, naming the scheme in each case, the gross tender price and the number of dwellings involved.

Mr. Freeson

I will answer this Question tomorrow.
