HC Deb 11 November 1974 vol 881 cc26-7W
Mrs. Ann Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many children have drowned in disused mill lodges and mill reservoirs in the last five years.

Dr. Summerskill

I regret that this information is not separately recorded. I was sorry to learn of the death of a two-year-old boy from this cause in the Bolton area last May.

Mrs. Ann Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will propose stricter safety requirements in respect of disused mill lodges and mill reservoirs in order to reduce the risk of accidental drowning.

Dr. Summerskill

My right hon. Friend and I recognise the danger, especially to children, which such waters present, but we must await the findings of the Home Office Working Party on Water Safety on this and other hazards before deciding what action is appropriate.
