HC Deb 07 November 1974 vol 880 c199W
Mr. Kilfedder

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many persons have been murdered in Northern Ireland since 1968; how many persons have been charged with murder; how many have been tried; and how many have been convicted.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

Since 1st January 1968, 874 persons have been murdered in Northern Ireland. 117 persons have been tried for murder in the same period and 54 convicted.

The number of persons charged in earlier years cannot be determined without disproportionate effort, but since 1st January 1973 163 persons have been charged with murder and, although not all the cases have yet been heard, 36 persons have so far been convicted.

Trials and convictions in a given period do not necessarily relate to the crimes in the same period.
