HC Deb 07 November 1974 vol 880 c219W
Mr. Ovenden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many applicants have been awarded attendance allowance in each of the years since its introduction; and what is her estimate of number of people entitled to the allowance who have not yet claimed.

Mr. Alfred Morris

Attendance allowances have been awarded as follows:

Higher Rate Lower Rate Totals (to nearest 1,000)
1971 52,000 Nil 52,000
1972 54,000 1,000 55,000
1973 49,000 40,000 89,000
1974* 29,000 33,000 62,000
* To 30th September 1974.

The total numbers in payment are still going up and it is estimated that they may, in the medium term, rise from their present level of 176,000 to something like 200,000.
