HC Deb 06 November 1974 vol 880 cc158-9W
Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what steps he intends to take to implement the recommendations of the Page Report on national savings.

Mr. Dell

The Government have recently announced their decisions on the Page Committee's major recommendations. Subject to the passage of legislation, the trustee savings banks will be allowed to develop along the lines the Page Committee proposed; and the competitive strength of the National Savings Bank will be maintained. Two new experimental index-linked savings schemes will be introduced next year as additions to the range of other national savings securities on offer. The national savings stamp will be discontinued after a period of about 2 years but the Government have rejected the committee's recommendation that the national savings movement should be abolished.
