HC Deb 06 November 1974 vol 880 cc168-9W
Mr. Clemitson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the redundancies recently announced by the London Brick Company.

Mr. John Fraser

The London Brick Company announced on 30th October that because of a general decline in house building and the fact that it had been stockpiling for some time it had found it necessary to make a further reduction in its labour force. I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that consequent upon this decision some 450 workers at Peterborough, 250 at Bedford and 100 at Bletchley are due to terminate their employment on 15th November 1974.

The MSC assures me that the full range of its services will be made available to assist those workers who may be made redundant. Provisional arrangements have already been made for officials of the Employment Service Agency to interview those being made redundant prior to their discharge in order to assist them in obtaining alternative employment and to advise them on opportunities for training and retraining. These arrangements will be put into effect immediately the individuals who may be made redundant have been identified.
