§ Miss Joan LestorThe agreement reached between Sir Alec Douglas-Home and Mr. Smith in 1971 was conditional upon the British Government being satisfied that the settlement proposals it contained were acceptable to the people of Rhodesia as a whole. The Pearce Commission found that this condition was not satisfied. That agreement therefore did not come into effect.
