asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the total annual consumption of water in Wales for the latest convenient year; what were the comparable figures for England and Scotland; and what proportions of each of these consumptions were for non-domestic purposes.

Mr. Rowlands

The annual consumption of water in Wales in 1972, which is the latest year for which complete figures are available, was 83,501 million gallons, of which 35,857 million gallons were in respect of metered supplies. These supplies are generally taken by industry and agriculture. Comparable figures for England were 1,077,433 million gallons and 692,425 million gallons for metered supplies. Figures for Scotland are not readily available.
