HC Deb 24 May 1974 vol 874 c303W
Mr. Madden

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for reports from chief constables throughout the country on the policy of the police in respect of the purchase of foreign-made vehicles for official use.

Dr. Summerskill

Responsibility for providing vehicles required by police forces in England and Wales rests upon police authorities. My information is that in general they buy British-made vehicles and that the number of foreign-made vehicles bought for particular police purposes amounts to less than 2 per cent. of the total number of vehicles used by all forces. I do not think it necessary to call for reports on this matter.
