HC Deb 23 May 1974 vol 874 c245W
Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many men are engaged full time on fishing in Scotland and England, respectively.

Mr. John Fraser

The most comprehensive estimates of the numbers engaged as fishermen are based on the provisional results of the 1971 Census of Population. These are as follows:

England Scotland
10,600 9,400
These include employees in employment, the self-employed and those seeking employment at the time of the census. The figures probably include a small number of part-time workers.

In 1966 the number of part-time fishermen in Great Britain was less than 400, but the corresponding figure for 1971 is not yet available.
