In England and Wales in the financial year 1972–73—the latest year for which information is available—the average weekly cost of keeping a male inmate in the several types of establishment was as follows:

(a) prisons and remand centres £33.72
(b) borstals and young prisoner centres. £41.35
(c) detention centres £37.76

Similar breakdowns for women s establishments are not available, but the average weekly cost of keeping a female inmate in 1972–73 was £46.51.
