HC Deb 21 May 1974 vol 874 cc83-4W
39. Mr. James Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much financial help is being given to local authorities and voluntary organisations in respect of providing accommodation facilities for battered wives and children.

Dr. Owen

Under the urban aid programme approval has been given for grants to two such organisations in London. In Hounslow the grant amounts to £10,315 a year for a minimum of five years, plus £3,450 for initial expenses. The grant to a project in Camden is £9,300, plus associated running costs for a minimum of five years. Twenty-five per cent. of the cost of these grants is borne by the local authorities concerned.

Mr. James Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what statistical information she has on the scale of the problem of battered wives and children in Humberside and particularly in Hull.

Dr. Owen

None, but officers of the Department are in touch with the newly opened Women's Aid Centre in Hull, where women who have been assaulted by their husbands are accommodated with their children.
