HC Deb 03 May 1974 vol 872 c268W
Mr. John Ellis

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what progress is being made in the development of a voluntary system of inspecting tyre pressure gauges; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Maclennan

There have been discussions between my Department, the Department of the Environment and representatives of local authorities about the development of voluntary testing services which are at present available from most local authorities. Further discussions are to be held to clarify the technical aspects and to formulate a scheme which can be recommended to local authorities. The adoption of such a scheme would enable road users to have full confidence in tyre pressure measurements made at service stations.
