HC Deb 03 May 1974 vol 872 cc331-2W
Mr. Rose

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will arrange for the gradual withdrawal of British troops from sensitive areas and where necessary the evacuation of minorities exposed to violence without any or any adequate protection.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

As I said during the debate on 4th April—[Vol. 871, c. 1463–77.]—we are aiming at the minimum number of troops in Northern Ireland which the situation requires. One unit is to be withdrawn from the Londonderry area shortly and further limited withdrawals are likely in the course of the year. Sufficient troops will remain to assist in maintaining law and order. Measures are being taken to strengthen the RUC.
