HC Deb 03 May 1974 vol 872 c331W
Mr. Rose

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will make a statement on the latest estimate of the annual financial subsidy to Northern Ireland by the United Kingdom as a whole.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The estimate of transfers from United Kingdom sources to Northern Ireland funds in 1973–74 is as follows:

£million
1. Grant-in-aid (NI Constitution Act 1973—S16) 175
2. Special Payments (Health Services; social services, regional Employment Premium) 52
3. Agricultural Support and Remoteness Grant 32
4. Payment to National Insurance Fund of NI 30
289

Since 31st December 1973 the cost of law, order and protective services has been borne by the Northern Ireland Office out of money provided by Parliament; the estimated cost for the last quarter of 1973–74 is £20 million. In addition the Northern Ireland authorities borrowed £66 million from the National Loans Fund in 1973–74.
