HC Deb 03 May 1974 vol 872 cc332-3W
Mr. Rose

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will lay down definite rules for parole to be applied without partiality in the case of the death of close relatives of prisoners; and whether he will inquire into current arrangements.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

Compassionate leave of absence may be granted to convicted prisoners in cases where a close relative has died. Applications are carefully and sympathetically considered, but each case has to be judged on its merits and with regard to the current security situation.

Mr. Rose

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, how many "Republican" prisoners have failed to honour the terms of their parole.

Mr. Merlyn Rees
