asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will announce measures designed to increase public sector house building in the Isle of Ely.

I will shortly be sending a circular to local authorities about the initiatives I am taking to increase local authority housing programmes. I hope that all local authorities with urgent housing needs will take immediate steps to deal with them.

For the Government's action on the immediate provision of more money for lending by building societies I refer the hon. Member to the statement made on 10th April by my right hon. Friend. The Government are considering the best way in which to examine the deeper underlying problems both of raising and lending funds for house purchase.
