Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the circumstances which led to the injury of an RUC constable in Dunloy, County Antrim, on or around Sunday 31st March.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

On Monday 1st April 1974 a three-manned police mobile patrol was on routine operation in the Dunloy area of County Antrim. At approximately 10.20 p.m. the vehicle stopped momentarily in Main Street Dunloy. A gunman fired a burst of shots at the rear of the vehicle from short range. A reserve constable was struck in the back by one shot and four other bullets struck the vehicle. The officer, although still in hospital, has made a good recovery from his wound. A man has been charged with the attempted murder of a reserve constable and has been remanded in custody.
