HC Deb 02 May 1974 vol 872 cc519-20W
52. Miss Harvie Anderson

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether, as the wholesale price of bananas in the United Kingdom has been rising due to a fall-off in supplies from the West Indies, he will encourage supplies from other sources; and whether talks being held with the Commonwealth Caribbean on bananas are related to keeping down prices in the interest of the consumer.

Mr. Moyle

The wholesale price of bananas reflects the prices paid to our overseas suppliers which, because of market conditions, are at their highest ever levels. Our aim is to secure the best possible level of supply to our market consistently with meeting our obligations to our traditional suppliers. This was made clear to the Prime Minister of Jamaica in our recent talks.
