HC Deb 01 May 1974 vol 872 cc476-7W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what are the powers of Her Majesty's Forces in Northern Ireland with regard to untaxed vehicles and vehicles suspected to be stolen or employed for terrorism.

Mr. William Rodgers

In addition to their powers under the Common law, the Northern Ireland (Emergency Provisions) Act 1973 provides that members of Her Majesty's Forces may stop, detain, enter, if needs be by force, and search any vehicle taxed or untaxed for munitions or explosives. They may require a vehicle to be moved for the purposes of search, and may within the provisions of the Act cause it to be destroyed.
