Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number of Government training centre places in each of the economic planning regions of England as a ratio of the total insured working population of each region.

Government Training Centres will be know as Skillcentres from 1st April, when the Training Services Agency assumes responsibility for running them.

Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many Government training centre places are provided in Sheffield; how many were filled in February 1974; and what are the main trades covered.

Mr. Harold Walker

In February 1974 there were 299 operational places available at Sheffield Government training centre of which 246 were filled. The following trades are taught: bricklaying; heating and ventilating fitting; capstan setting operating; centre lathe turning; milling setting operating; sheet and plate metal fabrication/welding; electric arc welding; fitting-general; fitting-electrical; instrument maintenance; radio, TV and electronic servicing; heavy vehicle repair and maintenance; motor vehicle-courses in body repair, repair and maintenance, spray painting; storekeeping. There is also a course in miscellaneous engineering operations.

Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what number of Government training centre places is provided for training in skills appropriate to women workers; and how many women were pursuing courses in Government training centres in February 1974.

Mr Harold Walker

All Government training centre courses are open equally to men and women, but few women apply. In December 1973, which is the latest date for which figures are available, there were 17 women in training at GTCs.
