asked the Secretary of State for Defence what were the numbers of Service men killed or injured while in Northern Ireland for each of the past 10 years to the latest date.

During the period of 10 years mentioned by my hon. Friend no Service men were killed or injured in Northern Ireland until August 1969. The figures since that date are as follows:

Notes:

(1) These are operational casualties, i.e. excluding flying, traffic and other accidents.

(2) "Injured" has been defined as injuries requiring hospital treatment.
