HC Deb 25 March 1974 vol 871 c28W
Mr. Grieve

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what has caused a delay of about eight years in settling the amount of betterment levy due on the estate of the late Mrs. A. M. Abrahall; and when executors may expect settlement of this matter.

Mr. John Silkin

The former Land Commission assessed betterment levy on the executors in June 1970 in respect of a sale of land in May 1969. When statutory objections against the levy were lodged by the executors, the district valuer reopened his negotiations with the levypayers' agent about valuations. Their differences could not be resolved until test cases on similar levy assessments were referred to the Lands Tribunal. The executors' agent has recently agreed valuations with the district valuer, and if the executors agree with their agent's view there remains no obstacle to early settlement.
