§ Mr. Carter-Jonesasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will seek to improve the liaison between those concerned regarding the supply of Possum electric typewriters in view of the 205W delay in supplying them to disabled persons who have good job prospects; if she will circulate to the appropriate authorities the methods by which such equipment can be obtained; and if she will make a statement.
§ Mr. Alfred MorrisAs my hon. Friend knows, my Department is responsible for the supply of Possum electric typewriters to the severely disabled who require them in order to be able to communicate. Responsibility for authorising supply of such equipment to disabled persons with employment prospects is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Employment, with whose Department we maintain close liaison, including obtaining the equipment on their behalf. Guidance on methods of supply for either purpose has been given to the appropriate authorities.
§ Mr. Carter-Jonesasked the Secretary of State for Social Services, in view of the fact that Possum equipment has a long life and can be used by other people, if she will take steps to ensure that even people with short-life expectancies shall be given environmental controllers and equipment, and speed up the process for the distribution of such equipment; and if she will make a statement.
§ Mr. Alfred MorrisGuidance has already been given about the wider interpretation of prescription criteria to enable such persons to obtain Possum equipment. Any delay in installation generally arises from the need for local authorities to adapt a person's home, including the provision of power supplies, to receive the equipment. In especially urgent cases, a temporary installation can be provided in a few days. If my hon. Friend has a particular case in mind I shall be pleased to receive details.
§ Mr. Carter-Jonesasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is her policy towards the supply of Possum environmental controllers and Possum typewriters to severely disabled persons living in residential homes and hostels; what advice is given by her Department in the provision of such equipment; and if she will make a statement.
§ Mr. Alfred MorrisPotential users of Possum equipment are treated as individuals206W and no distinction is made as to their domicile. The decision to supply to those in residential homes and hostels follows the recomendation of a medical assessor and consultation with the authorities of the home.
