HC Deb 21 March 1974 vol 870 cc134-5W
Mrs. Colquhoun

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total value of the nation's overseas assets in the form of private holdings and in the form of Government-owned assets, respectively.

Mr. Dell

A detailed breakdown of United Kingdom overseas assets and liabilities is provided in the United Kingdom Balance of Payments 1973, published by the Central Statistical Office (Annex 1, Table 42). These estimates relate to the position at the end of 1972 and show gross identified private sector assets of £22,800 million and Government gross assets, including the official reserves, of £4,336 million. Net assets of the private sector were £7,250 million. The public sector was a net debtor to the extent of £1,250 million. Information on changes in 1973 is not yet available.

Mrs. Colquhoun

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his policy towards the disposal of British overseas assets as an alternative to borrowing from the International Monetary Fund.

Mr. Dell

My right hon. Friend will refer to the financing of the balance of payments deficit in his Budget speech.
