HC Deb 21 March 1974 vol 870 c160W
Mr. Hunter

asked the Secretary of State for Energy when he proposes to revoke the remaining restrictions on the use of electricity.

Mr. Varley

I am laying an order before the House revoking from midnight on Saturday 23rd March 1974 the four orders which remain in force. These orders restrict heating and lighting, mainly in offices, shops and other establishments, and prohibit the use of electricity for advertising, display and floodlighting purposes. From next Sunday there will be no restrictions on the use of electricity. The electricity authorities have confirmed that they can meet the extra demand. But I appeal to every consumer to continue to use electricity as economically as possible and to cut out waste. There is a continuing need to do this in the short term to help build up fuel stocks at power stations and in the longer term generally to use energy economically and efficiently.
