asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what are his intentions in regard to the future of the Maplin project.

Mr. Crosland

The Government have announced their intention to reappraise the value of certain major development projects, and this will include the Maplin project. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Trade will be making a statement shortly about this reappraisal. In the meantime, I shall authorise no further work at Maplin.

Mr. Moonman

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will abandon the plans for constructing the third London airport project at Maplin in Essex.

Mr. Crosland

As I said in reply to the hon. Member for Essex, South-East (Sir B. Braine) today, the Government have announced their intention to reappraise the value of certain major development projects, and this will include the Maplin project. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Trade will be making a statement shortly about this reappraisal. In the meantime, I shall authorise no further work at Maplin.
