HC Deb 28 June 1974 vol 875 c34W
Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will draw the attention of chemical and gas plant operators to the Neotronics Automatic Gas Monitor produced in collaboration with the NRDC and Safety in Mines Research Establishment in Sheffield, and which gives early warning of a potentially dangerous build-up of flammable gases in the air.

Mr. Harold Walker

The Neotronics Automatic Gas Monitor is one of a number of instruments on the market designed to give early warning of an escape of flammable gas. Most use a pellistor, a small sampling device which can detect the presence of flammable vapours, developed by the Safety in Mines Research Establishment at Sheffield. The development of the Neotronics instrument was supported by the National Research and Development Board in the usual way as it had a number of new features: it has a long maintenance-free life, is cheap and self-monitoring. A certificate from the British Approval Service for Electrical Equipment in Flammable Atmospheres which will enable the device to be used has been sought and work is proceeding.
