asked the Prime Minister what functions he performs as First Lord of the Treasury.

I have been asked to reply.

My right hon. Friend performs the same functions as First Lord of the Treasury as his predecessor. He is one of the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury and may act as such in the exercise of any of the functions of the Treasury, although he does not normally do so. He also has a statutory responsibility for determining the salary of certain Ministers; exercises certain powers of patronage; and has various ex-officio functions.
