HC Deb 24 June 1974 vol 875 cc325-6W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many rape cases there were in the United Kingdom for the last year for which figures are available; and in how many of these cases the judge requested the Press to refrain from publishing the names of the parties involved.

Mr. Alexander W. Lyon

In 1973 in England and Wales 429 persons were tried at the Crown Court for rape; in addition 17 juveniles were dealt with summarily. I regret that there is no readily available information about the number of cases in which the court requested the Press to refrain from publishing the names of the parties involved.
