HC Deb 21 June 1974 vol 875 c262W
Mr. Pym

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is aware that the present market price for beef has declined to little more than £16 per live cwt. in many markets; and if he will now indicate at what level he is prepared to intervene on the market to ensure that the beef market does not collapse.

Mr. Peart

I do not believe that buying up meat and freezing it is a sensible or effective way of supporting producers' returns. I have already announced that the beef guide price will rise by 10 per cent. in the United Kingdom on 1st July. I shall be continuing to watch the situation carefully to see if further measures are needed to secure producers' returns.
