HC Deb 19 June 1974 vol 875 cc182-3W
Mr. Edge

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services, in view of the fact that the number of physiotherapists at present employed by the National Health Service is 50 per cent. short of establishment, if she will take special steps to remedy this situation.

Dr. Owen

In the absence of generally accepted staffing standards there is no prescribed national establishment against which to set existing staffing levels, but I accept that there are shortages, and I am considering possible ways of stimulating both the new recruitment and the attraction of qualified staff back into NHS employment.

Mr. Edge

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services when she expects to be able to make an announcement about increased rates of remuneration for physiotherapists.

Dr. Owen

Increases effective from 1st April 1974 were notified to employing authorities on 15th May.
