My right hon. Friend hopes to be able to announce new rates of grant for postgraduate students in about a month's time.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will make a statement about his policy towards the replacement of postgraduate grants by a system of loans.

My right hon. Friend has no present plans to introduce a system of loans in place of grants for postgraduate students.
