§ Mr. Newensasked the Secretary of State for Employment what has been the expenditure annually since 1970 in research into the development of techniques to identify carcinogens present in industrial processes.
§ Mr. Harold WalkerAlthough my Department has since 1970 undertaken a number of epidemiological surveys to identify cancer risks in industry, it has not undertaken any research specifically into the development of techniques. I am advised that the Medical Research Council is responsible for a number of pieces of basic research relevant to the development of monitoring methods for possible carcinogens, and that industry is also contributing to research in this field. My Department is in touch with similar research currently being undertaken overseas.
