HC Deb 14 June 1974 vol 874 cc666-7W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if she has studied the evidence in the Doctor regarding gluten-free diet and multiple sclerosis; and if she will make a statement on her policy towards this matter;

(2) when she anticipates that the Advisory Committee on Border Line Substances will report;

(3) if, in view of the possible delay in the report of the Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances regarding gluten- free bread and multiple sclerosis, she will reconsider her decision not to allow general practitioners to prescribe this diet on the National Health Service.

Dr. Owen

The question of gluten-free diet and multiple sclerosis and the article in theDoctor is being referred to the Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances. I am sure the committee will report as quickly as possible. I would not be justified in anticipating its findings.
