Mr. Pattie

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the average waiting period to take a driving test for England and Wales as a whole as compared with the waiting time for London and the Home Counties.

Mr. Carmichael

On 24th May, 20.6 weeks for England and Wales and 26.4 weeks for the Metropolitan Traffic Area, which includes parts of the Home Counties bordering on Greater London.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what measures are being taken to reduce the waiting period for driving tests in the Home Counties.

Mr. Carmichael

The scheme for recruitment of additional driving examiners is being supplemented by a special drive to fill vacancies in London and the Home Counties.
