asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will take action to secure the immediate release of Miss Ballantine, arrested by the East German authorities while in transit from West Berlin to the Federal Republic and held incommunicado contrary to the United Nations Charter of Human Rights and to international conventions.

Mr. Hattersley

The British Vice-Consul in East Berlin saw Miss Ballantine this morning. When his report is received we shall consider what further steps can be taken to help Miss Ballantine.
