HC Deb 10 June 1974 vol 874 cc476-7W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list in the OFFICIAL REPORT those schools in Scotland affected by structural and material defects similar to those experienced first in Camden in June 1973 and Stepney in February 1974, stipulating the costs involved and state what advice is now given to local authorities affected by similar problems.

Mr. William Ross

Only Kirkton High School, Dundee, has been reported to my Department as being seriously affected by structural defects similar to those found in the Camden School for Girls, London. The estimated cost of the first phase of remedial works is £300,000. Checks have revealed structural faults not requiring extensive remedial works at some other schools, but these are not positively identified as arising from the Camden type of failure. No defects of the kind found more recently in Sir John Cass School, Stepney, London, have so far been brought to my notice.

Local authorities have been given technical advice on the assessment of suspect structures. Further guidance has been issued about the Stepney case.
