HC Deb 10 June 1974 vol 874 cc401-2W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Energy (1) what is his estimate of the energy demand in 1985 for the United Kingdom;

(2) what is his estimate of the energy demand in 1985 in Wales.

United Kingdom Wales
1970 1973 1970 1973
Electricity generated by nuclear power stations (GWh) 26,022 27,997 3,391 4,800
Share of total inland energy consumption (per cent.)† 2.8 2.9 * *
* Not available.
† Calculated on a primary fuel input basis.

Electricity generated by nuclear power stations is fed into the general grid distribution system. It is, therefore, not possible to say that such electricity generated in Wales is necessarily part of total energy consumption in Wales.

Mr. Varley

Future energy demand is a matter of great uncertainty. The forecasts prepared by my Department are subject to continuous revision. I consider, therefore, that publication of estimates of future energy consumption would be unhelpful at the present time. However, I shall continue to review the possibility of publishing forecasts.
